TIPS FOR RESEARCH PROPOSAL PRESENTATION

Assalamualaikum,

I've been procastinating on a lot of things lately, not because I was lazy (I think), but I had so many things to do for the past few days since my mock research proposal presentation last week. Syukur, Alhamdulillah. It went well.

The comments from my supervisor and co-supervisor were:
- I had monotonous voice
- I had less confidence when I present something that I don't really know
- I need to read more for better understanding
In summary,  I need to polish my skills for the presentation!!!!

But, I am sssoooooooo glad that I didn't have to do many changes for the slide presentation. So, I would like to share here so that I will remember forever, "What are the tips for a good slides of research proposal presentation?

1. A "Table of Contents"
Usually in the thesis, there is a page with this title of "Table of Contents". There is no need for this page in the research proposal presentation. But, you still have to list them out. This is because, the headings and the subheading of the Table of Content will become the title for the slides.

Basically, the list will look like this:
1. Introduction
2. Literature review
3. Problem statement
4. General objective
5. Specific objectives
6. Methodology
7. Dummy tables
8. Expected outcome
9. Gantt chart
10. References

The slides will be clear to us and also to the audience. It is more organized this way.

2. A picture is worth a thousand words
Almost 70-80% of my slide presentation content were illustrated by figures, photos, tables and charts. Based on my experience while doing Master degree, I realized that the audience came from many different backgrounds. Thus, research proposal should be scientific but at the same time understandable to the audience.

Note: If we don't want the audience to ask so many questions, then, we should explain everything but keep it simple so that it shows:
i. We know what we are talking about
ii. We look confident enough about our study
iii. We are sure what we are going to do

So, let's put colours and pictures in the slide presentation. :)

3. Dummy tables
During our research methodology course recently, the spekers told us to have Dummy Tables in the research proposal so that, we really know what are the datas that we should collect in our study. From my understanding, a dummy table is an empty table of the results but it is the table as if you want to put in the thesis later on. I think it is good to have these dummy tables. It showed not only what data to be collected but also, the statistical tests we will be using to analyse our data too.

I think, that's all for now.
Hope I'll remember always the tips that I have shared here. Arasso...

DATELINE TACHYCARDIA

Assalamualaikum

It had been pouring since Friday. The weather is very cold. The monsoon season has arrived.

I am in the middle of preparing my slides for my research proposal presentation. The dateline is this Wednesday. My SV asked all her supervisee to present to her and in front of small audience in 3 days time. I had been working since last Tuesday but the momentum just gets better when the dateline is near. haha.

Yesterday, I think it was the day that I worked really hard for the presentation. I've prepared the problem statement, the methodology, the dummy tables and the expected outcome. So, now I'm left with the LITERATURE REVIEW. Yup. Save the best at the last. haha. So, yesterday, I had to work hard because I have the facts in my head but my facts are not strong enough. When my husband asked questions about my research, I could answer him. But, without references, it sounded like "kelentong". haha. So, the hardest part has come and that is searching for the references.

I am actually still in the honeymoon state. I am still easy-going with my PhD. Thanks to the wake up call by my SV. Hopefully with having many datelines, it will motivate me to do work diligently, persistently, hardworkingly, smartly with preseverence and everythingelse that I am supposed to do to graduate on time (GOT) insyaAllah.

Bashirah, my partner in crime for PhD,  shared with me a FB post last night. She said it made her cry. I was focusing with my slide preparation, so, I kept it for reading this morning. You can read it at the http://bubblesintheocean.com/. My husband commented that a lot of things can happen while doing PhD. And I shouldn't be so stress. The depression, anxiety, panic attack, it could happen to any PhD students or even the undergraduate students. So, he asked me to take it easy while preparing the slide presentation. Just do it. The most important thing for this PhD is just to pass. Not to get a medal. Not to get number one. Just pass. InsyaAllah. Thanks Mr Hubby for understanding...

I wish my Sister Putri all the best in her future. She has inspired me and taught me that Allah is always there for us. The most importantly, life doesn't end in this world, but we have a lifetime to spend in the Akhirat that we should look after.

Good tips shared by the blog from Sister Putri and her husband:

GUIDANCE FOR MUSLIM’S PHD OR MASTER’S STUDENTS
I am preparing some slides to be shared with the postgraduate students here as part of the motivation to deal with PhD works. However, though the steps are followed, it is still not a guarantee to get a PhD but Insha Allah you’ll appreciate this journey and be grateful to ALLAH. These are some tips:
1. Develop passion, relate the studies to Allah’s knowledge
2. Effective Communication (Writing Skills, Communication Skills, Persuasive Skills, Presentation Skills)
3. Humility and Humbleness win the heart!
4. Organise, organise and organise -> self-discipline
5. Dhuha and Tahajjud prayers keep the momentum of the day
6. Fulfil the rights to the spouse, kids, family members and other people. PhD is a family affair!
7. Perseverance (Al-Baqarah: 286). Keep moving on and persistence!
8. Treat yourselves before moving on. Give a pat on your back -> Take pride of your work
9. If something went wrong, quickly ask forgiveness from Allah and always do ‘muhasabah’.
10. Accept for the fact that no matter how hard you try, if Allah didn’t want you to have it, Allah already made you ready to face the fact that you’ll not get it, but praise Him for the experiences that you encountered throughout the journey. Insha Allah, Allah already destined you for something greater.

patience, perseverance and play

Please make doa for me for this Wednesday! ;)

p/s: What's with the title? To stay awake and highly energetic, I drank a mug full with a packet of white coffee last night and my heart beat was tachycardic. Felt like dancing Zumba late last night. But, I drank lots of water and Alhamdulillah it subsided. hehe. Adios amigos.

PROPOSAL PRESENTATION

Assalamualaikum

Alhamdulillah I presented my research proposal in front of departmental staffs today morning! I spoke too fast and my sequence was hay wired.. What should come 1st was last and what's supposed to be the last was brought in front...

How I wish all my 3 supervisors are there, but Alhamdulillah... with only 1 supervisor who came during her leaves, really gave me good moral support. I am happy that she could make it...

From there, I have to do a lot more reading and structure back my slides so that people can understand my study, my workloads and my research.

Sad but in a good way.. Very happy with the fact that it was a hot discussion and a lot of work to be done and enough for my master...
May Allah help me pass through till the end...
ALLAHUAKBAR!

Now, good luck to my husband to present!

ALHAMDULILLAH... SYUKRILLAH

Assalamualaikum,

Today I had a meeting with my 2 supervisors. My other supervisor couldn't make it...
As usual, my IBS made a peek-a-boo. Luckily it didn't took so long in the toilet.
MY 2 SUPERB SUPERVISORS made lots of comments and suggestions regarding my proposal presentation scheduled next friday... Another IBS will definitely come next week..hehe

They made me read and prepared a lot, eventhough still not enough, but today, I am so happy with this remark,
"You just do ....................., and with this, it'll be enough for your master."
Allah knows how happy I was when he said it and another supervisor agreed... :)
May this motivates me to do my best and be the best in my field... Ameen Ya Rabb

I AM SORRY BUT NOT SO SORRY

Assalamualaikum,

Today is going to be my day with all my THREE SUPERB SUPERVISORS!!! I hope we can come to a SOLID CONCLUSIONS! InsyaAllah...

Well, yesterday my husband's best friend called him and asked him about his research proposal. hehe. He blamed me for writing about his research proposal's problem in the blog. ehem ehem.. Actually kan abang, abang sendiri tulis dalam blog abang tu. That's whyla Best Friend abang dapat tau.. Huda punya best friend pun dapat tau jugak lah! hehehe.

But, I would like to thank his best friend for calling him yesterday! He really made Abang's day! Gelak sampai guling2!!! hehe. Thanks to my best friend for calling also. Sorry couldn't talk long. Huzaifah nowadays becoming attention seeker of Ummi. So, that's why the noisy background you heard... Anyways, please send pictures of your daughter, Thank You!

Syukur Alhamdulillah, his research proposal had been submitted and insyaAllah already approved. However there are so many amendments that needs to be done before sending it tomorrow. Hopefully you can do it... Can't help him much though this time as I'm also in middle of making sense of my research, and reading all the printed articles... "Finding the articles is one thing, but reading the articles is another thing!," one professor said.. But to me, I would add after the sentence, "Understanding the articles is definitely something!" hehe

NEVER ENDING PROPOSAL...

Assalamualaikum...

It had been a while since I updated my blog...
Well when it comes to problems with my research, then only I'll be back to writing up my blog I guess, just to have a look at the title of my blog make me smile.. ;)

Last week, because of some unexpected problem, my husband had a big test on him regarding his research proposal. So, I helped my husband little bit here and there for his research proposal...He had to change the title of his research and start new again.. Well, it was quite surprising with the minutes that we spent to do his search, but Alhamdulillah, in time, we have already submitted his research proposal today...

As for me, I had to do changes here and there for the recommendations made by the Research Committee. I had to change the number of the nnnnnnn... just to make it scientifically perfect!!! Anyways, I replied in the proposal that since you ask for the increased number of animals, then, the budget grant must be increased as well!!! haha

Hopefully, they will give us the money! Because with the amount of honey that I have used for the research almost reach 1000... hhmm... duit poket sendiri!

Alhamdulillah, the research proposal has been sent today also...
Hopefully both my research proposal and my husband's will be accepted and everything goes smoothly after this.. AMEEN!

COMMITTEE MEETING

Assalamualaikum,

We went to see the Executive Officer for postgraduate students today after the meeting the committee had yesterday. There were 16 research proposals to be approved...

Alhamdulillah, she said that my research proposal was OK and need a little bit more of addition here and there...

But, unfortunately, Abang's research proposal might be held back because (of somethings not to be mentioned here)... He had already changed the topic for 5 times!!! Hmm, his supervisors should be held responsible for that actually... But, maybe there's hikmah from yesterday's discussion with one of our lecturers... This is another test from Him...

ALLAH KNOWS BEST!!
ALLAH KNOWS WHAT'S BEST FOR US!!
Learn to sabar and redha as we had tried to do our best!!

To my dearest other half...
Sabar, Redha, Doa..
InsyaAllah Allah will show you the way and make things easy for us all...Ameen.
Make doa, and always pray and hope... that the next research proposal title will be accepted by the supervisors and also the committee.
Even though it's late, insyaAllah it will not be too late...
Don't Be Sad...
Hugs...

ALHAMDULILLAH.. SUBMITTED

Salaam...
Syukur Alhamdulillah have finally submitted my research proposal..
It had been busy thinking and spinning bowel motions at the same for the past 2 weeks!!!
I had to finish up my research proposal to be subimtted yesterday actually, but I managed to submit this morning only... (if my supervisors dot to know..)

Thanks to my 3 supervisors who really discussed and worked up for my research proposal's editing. Syukur Alhamdulillah for the last meeting for the final "touch up" for the proposal. I hope I can be the same soon insyaAllah when I get the title LECTURER and when my student asking for my help later on.. AMEEN. :)

Postgraduate study is not as bad as undergraduate, they said... but still, when I was in the middle of writing up the proposal, I felt that they are both just the same. I never stopped going to toilet every now and then. haha..

Anyways, syukur one step is done. Now, Abang's turn to make his final draft to submit to the Kuliyyah. May Allah ease him and my friends to make the research proposal ready by end of this week. InsyaAllah you can do it Abang!! :) I have yet many steps after this to make this research "happening", insyaAllah.. AMEEN.

That's all for now.. Will try to start to discipline self and start lab work tomorrow, insyaAllah!!! NO MORE EXCUSES!!! ;0

JUMU'AH SA'EEDAH

Alhamdulillah..
Syukur, Alhamdulillah..

My 1st research proposal presentation was during the meeting with all 3 SUPERB supervisors... and it went well..

Yesterday, I had 2nd research proposal presentation to a Professor from Singapore. My supervisor wanted me to share my proposal with the Professor. I waited 2 days to present and as usual, same as what has happened to me back in student life during my undergrad, my irritable bowel syndrome joined me back! Initially i thought that the meeting was going to be on Wednesday, I had gastric on that day because of late lunch and not heavy breakfast. Yesterday I had heavy meal for breakfast and chocolate bread for lunch. At 4pm, my bowel started to sound uneasy! Luckily I didn't go to toilet coz at 4:50pm, I was called to present to the Prof.

Alhamdulillah, he was very nice man. He suggested a few research questions for me to study and look into further. He also suggested few methodologies. It was a very good discussion and he said that I should go for tuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut!!! hehe (tak boleh bgtau lagi, tunggu la hari tuuuut, baru boleh bgtau. hehe)

Alhamdulillah, I've finished my writing up for my research proposal to be submitted next week. Hopefully not many changes that I have to do after my supervisors checking and editing. InsyaAllah.. May Allah ease me and my husband in this field. AMEEN

JUMUA'H SA'EEDAH!
